Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark Review

Almost everything seems possible when it comes to musical nowadays. “Glee” didn’t commit the endeavor of composing originals unlike “High School Musical”. Legendary bands such as Queen, The Beatles and ABBA already had a take on musicals. Harry Potter was adapted into a musical play. Now, it’s Spiderman’s turn.

“Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark” is, hands down, the most expensive Broadway production with over 180 preview performances. Call it a first in musical theatre history, but some critics slammed the entire production that eventually led to Julie Taymor’s negation to direct the musical. However, life still went on for the production team amid expectations that they need Taymor’s presence. In fact, the “Across the Universe” director wrote its book adaptation.
Contrary to rumors, the Spider-Man musical only took $75 million worth of 7-month previews. Not to mention, several glitches were roughly seen during its first weeks of staging. Despite all that drama, the play emerged from technically amateurish to something that’s more primed. Everything about it streamlines honesty although its magic seems to be getting out of the way.

But what makes the Spider-Man musical a must-see are the songs in it. Expectations were at least on high when U2’s Bono and The Edge took the job of writing them. Indeed, fans of the legendary rock band will have a great time watching the musical. The unpretentiousness in portraying Spiderman singing a song after another is not merely an expansion of a famous hero’s persona. After all, seeing Reeve Carney shines on stage is a surprise! T.V Carpio is a big revelation in the musical, as her convincing portrayal left audiences amazed. As for the visual splendors, it went satisfactory.
Although it could have been better as a film, “Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark” is still a must-see in Broadway.
