Wicked (The Musical) Review

“Fabulous!” is the best word to describe Stephen Schwartz’ Tony-winning musical, “Wicked”. Based from Gregory McGuire’s novel of the same name, the play tells the story of two best friends struggling to make the impossible things happen. Its storyline is as spellbinding as the magic of Glinda and Elphaba’s unlikely friendship, plus the writing adds to that magic.
The musical’s fabulousness is everywhere – thanks to its jaw-dropping special effects and scenes that keep audiences rolling with delight. The colourful dance performances sparkles but not how “Moulin Rouge” does. McGuire’s book may not have been a sell-out, but his writing gives fantasy a totally different meaning. And that is simply good enough for the musical’s conceptualization. The story puts audiences on a whole new perspective of wizards and witches. Also, it gives a surreal picture of how a witch becomes a witch and how a scarecrow becomes one long before Dorothy (from the “Wizard of Oz”) came in. Hence, these are few among the questions that only the musical can answer.
The vocal performances from its main cast are candidly done well. In fact, the songs are just an addition to the story’s enchantment. The actors nailed it with much flair leaving audiences satisfied. Most of them are comedians; no wonder every single line is brutally hilarious. The only bad thing about the musical is that some scenes may be too frightening, especially for kids below 7. Also, the sudden change of every backdrop to another is a bit complex. But what makes the musical a “must-see-or-else-you’ll-miss-out-the-fantasy” is how old-fashioned magic can make dreams come true. The acting and song & dance numbers connected well with the audience’s imagination, making “Wicked” a modern classic for all ages. After watching it, you’ll soon realize that “defying gravity” is a fulfilment!

Broadway aficionados must owe it to Bob Gaudio and Bob Crewe. If not for these musical greats, a theatrical production patterned with documentary elements is impossible. The two Bobs’ hit musical “Jersey Boys” is a work of non-fiction, as it is based on the story of American 60s rock band The Four Seasons.
The rock musical, which made its Broadway debut in 2005, received five Tony Awards in 2006 including Best Musical. While it doesn’t have to be compared to “We Will Rock You” and “Elvis”, the Broadway production came out as a celebration of music triumphed by friendships.
The musical clues you in to how The Four Seasons marked a name in the industry. They may not have been as phenomenal as The Beatles, The Who, The Doors and other rock quartets, but the core of their success lies beneath their genuine bond. It is a coming-of-age musical of sorts, with its fast-paced and upbeat scenes testifying the unassuming aspect of it all.
The original Broadway cast, led by Frankie Valli, will always be as refreshing as the morning sun. In fact, “refreshing” is the word that best describes The Four Season’s musicality. Every single performance from the cast is beyond genius with Tommy Devito (one-fourth of the band) as a revelation.
Unlike other jukebox musicals of today, the play involves a lot of heavy emphasis throughout storytelling. But that is clearly an addition to its entire appeal. Although the subject matter may be a little sensitive, audiences don’t deserve nostalgia while watching it. In between scenes are discourses on infidelity, rebellion and sexual innuendo, but those aren’t necessarily a shock value throughout the storyline.
The question is, is “Jersey Boys” a must-see for everyone? Apparently not! But that doesn’t mean the rock musical’s main subject proves audiences wrong.

The Spectacular Glory of Cirque Du Soleil

*Cirque du Soleil (Meaning in English: “Circus of the Sun”, is a Canadian entertainment company, self-described as a “dramatic mix of circus arts and street entertainment.” Based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and located in the inner-city area of Saint-Michel, it was founded in Baie-Saint-Paul in 1984 by two former street performers, Guy Laliberté and Daniel Gauthier.

In 1984, two Canadian street performers Daniel Gauthier and Guy Laliberte founded a group of actors and dancers that will inevitably pioneer the use of drama plays mixed with circus arts. Little did they know that in the next few years, their group will change the way people see circus entertainment.

And so the Cirque Du Soleil was born, and for 20 years, they have wowed the world with their spectacular performances.

The global phenomenon continues as they added “Iris” to their string of epic productions. The latest Cirque production is the brainchild of Philippe Decoufle, a French dancer and choreographer. This is his Cirque debut, yet the production became a testament to his professionalism. To put it this way, his masterpiece was a $100 million extravaganza like it wasn’t really his Cirque debut.

The overall aesthetics of “Iris” will do no wrong. The production’s main subject apparently came to terms of naturalism. Decoufle put in minimalistic touches that clearly emphasized the story of how movies can expand imagination and change personal perspectives. However, “Iris” also had a fair share of certainty. The magic of its conceptualization is relevant to the golden era of motion picture, but it didn’t leave the audiences disenchantment. After all, the movie makes the world go round – and perhaps Decoufle wanted his Cirque debut that way.

“Iris” also marks the debut of some Olympic standouts in acrobatics. Its total 72 performers give justice in evoking the wonders of cinematic proportions. In fact, Cirque has managed to live a highly reputed status of choosing the best actors, dancers and acrobats.

You don’t have to be a connoisseur of all Cirque Du Soleil productions only to appreciate “Iris”. Its spectacular glory is a testament to Gauthier and Laliberte’s progressive groundwork. It’s Decoufle at his finest that never disappoints.

The Lion King Musical Review

It has always been a dream come true to witness a Disney-animated film adapted into theatre. Seeing well-loved Disney characters portrayed by theatre actors in the real has never been this magical. A lot of Disney-animated films have already turned into Broadway productions, but nothing beats the magic of “The Lion King”.

The Tim Rice and Elton John musical debuted on Broadway in 1997. Since its sold-out premiere at the Orpheum Theatre in Minnesota, the play started staging local performances worldwide. The West End production debuted at the Lyceum Theatre in 1999, and regular performances are still running. Because of its success, the West End actors were invited by the Royal Variety Performance Group to stage the musical in front of the Royal Family.

There are a lot of emotional involvements throughout the musical. Something that’s not quite different from the animated version. The story speaks for itself:  here’s this cute and young cub Simba destined by his parents to lead the African kingdom of Pride Rock. As he grows into a courageous lion, Simba unexpectedly faces the biggest struggle of battling his father Mufasa’s arch nemesis Scar.

Now here comes the play’s tear-jerking part: As Simba unravels his innocence, Mufasa’s spirit lurks everywhere. A particular scene showing Simba having an intimate time with his father brings many audiences to tears. Considerably, it is the most significant part of the entire Broadway production. The musical scoring deserves a “hands down”. Incorporating traditional African music brings a lot of justice to the play’s concept. The production design and costumes is just as spectacular as how the film version is and acting-wise, the original Broadway cast is exceptional.

In general, “The Lion King” adapted into a musical play is unforgettably a classic! Its spectacles, storyline and awe-inspiring music are truly an extraordinaire.
