Wicked (The Musical) Review
“Fabulous!” is the best word to describe Stephen Schwartz’ Tony-winning musical, “Wicked”. Based from Gregory McGuire’s novel of the same name, the play tells the story of two best friends struggling to make the impossible things happen. Its storyline is as spellbinding as the magic of Glinda and Elphaba’s unlikely friendship, plus the writing adds to that magic.
The musical’s fabulousness is everywhere – thanks to its jaw-dropping special effects and scenes that keep audiences rolling with delight. The colourful dance performances sparkles but not how “Moulin Rouge” does. McGuire’s book may not have been a sell-out, but his writing gives fantasy a totally different meaning. And that is simply good enough for the musical’s conceptualization. The story puts audiences on a whole new perspective of wizards and witches. Also, it gives a surreal picture of how a witch becomes a witch and how a scarecrow becomes one long before Dorothy (from the “Wizard of Oz”) came in. Hence, these are few among the questions that only the musical can answer.
The vocal performances from its main cast are candidly done well. In fact, the songs are just an addition to the story’s enchantment. The actors nailed it with much flair leaving audiences satisfied. Most of them are comedians; no wonder every single line is brutally hilarious. The only bad thing about the musical is that some scenes may be too frightening, especially for kids below 7. Also, the sudden change of every backdrop to another is a bit complex. But what makes the musical a “must-see-or-else-you’ll-miss-out-the-fantasy” is how old-fashioned magic can make dreams come true. The acting and song & dance numbers connected well with the audience’s imagination, making “Wicked” a modern classic for all ages. After watching it, you’ll soon realize that “defying gravity” is a fulfilment!
