War Horse Musical Review
It’s funny how theatre can sometimes manipulate audiences. In the case of Broadway and West End’s adaptation of Michael Morpugo’s 1982 book however, the artifice of it all wasn’t too ridiculous.
The book, entitled “War Horse”, seemed to have fair share of brazenness when it was adapted into a play. Audiences thought it was cheap and at times predictable, but those didn’t spoil the simplicity of its production and writing. With the Broadway and West End productions helmed by Tom Morris and Marianne Elliot, the play clues you in to how a boy’s unconditional love for an animal can transcend time and boundaries.
In the play, audiences will see more of a “boy meets horse” story instead of a “boy meets world”. After all, the horse has become his world. So when the war calls for itself, the boy lefts his horse. It took years before he came back and though things have changed, his love for the horse remained. The essence of the play lies beneath its melodramatic feel. In other words, it’s a children’s story with a lot of melodrama. However, there are times wherein the drama can be sappy and overrated as it boils down to how emotional rides can bore audiences.
Some critics labelled the play as a wholesome version of “Equus”, and people couldn’t agree more. The only difference is that in Morpugo’s book, the boy’s love for his horse didn’t went too much. It was an absolute love – true! But he had to take sacrifices. The acting from the cast is as heartfelt as how ideal characters from children’s stories are. Although some actors failed to give justice to their portrayals, the raw and theatrical feel remains a standout. “War Horse” may not be as intriguing as Equus but still, it’s a must-watch!
